Who can join the Des Plaines Youth Symphony?
The Des Plaines Youth Symphony is open to young musicians with prior experience playing their instrument. Students should be comfortable reading music. No prior experience participating in a group rehearsal setting is required.
What instruments are accepted?
For our first season, registration is open to string players: violin, viola, cello, and bass.
Does my student need to audition?
No formal audition is required for the first season. Students may be asked to share basic information about their playing experience so we can meet each student's needs.
What level of experience does my student need?
Students should have at least some prior experience on their instrument and should be able to read music. The ensemble is designed for students who are ready to rehearse in a group setting and continue developing their skills.
When and where are rehearsals?
Rehearsal information, including the day, time, location, and start date, are posted on the Schedule page.
How often does the ensemble rehearse?
The ensemble will rehearse once per week during the season.
Is regular attendance required?
Yes. Regular attendance is important because each student plays an important role in the ensemble. Students are expected to attend rehearsals but in the event that a rehearsal must be missed, please communicate the conflict as soon as possible.
What should students bring to rehearsal?
Students should bring their instrument, music, pencil, and any required accessories such as rosin, shoulder rest, rock stop, etc.
How much does it cost to participate?
Tuition information is listed on the Sign Up page. Tuition helps cover rehearsal space, music, insurance, administrative costs, and other expenses needed to operate the ensemble.
When is payment due?
Payment deadlines are posted on the Sign Up page.
Are scholarships or financial assistance available?
At this time, scholarship availability may be limited as this is our first season. Families with questions about financial assistance are encouraged to contact us.
Will there be concerts?
Yes. Students will have 2 concerts during the season. Concert details will be posted on the Schedule page once confirmed.
What should students wear for performances?
Concert attire is all black formal clothes.
Does my student need to live in Des Plaines to join?
No. Students from Des Plaines and all surrounding communities are welcome to register.
Is this program connected to a school district?
The Des Plaines Youth Symphony is a community youth ensemble and is not part of a school district or school program. Although the Executive Director is also the Orchestra Director at Chippewa Middle School, DPYS and the Chippewa Middle School Orchestra are two separate programs.
Can my student participate if they are already in school orchestra?
Yes. Students are encouraged to continue participating in their school music program while also joining the Des Plaines Youth Symphony.
How do I register?
Registration can be completed through the sign-up form on the website. After submitting the form, families will receive additional information about next steps.
